Five Ways to Improve the Air Quality of Bedroom

The bedroom definitely must be your ultimate abode for relaxation after a challenging and exhausting day that demands much of your energy. It is necessary to keep this room of your homes clean and tidy so that you can come back to a good environment to relax. However, even though you may strive to keep everything in your bedrooms to perfection, there may be few basic things you might fail to look into like the air.

Yes, certain things that we may not be able to see but still directly has an impact on our daily life and one amongst the very long list is the air we breathe in. Everything from the mattresses you sleep on to the comfy pyjamas you wear can contain toxins. It is no doubt that the air we breathe in today is extremely polluted by harmful gases and toxins that are not only hazardous to our health but also the planet. Many of us live under the assumption that we are safe inside our homes. Unfortunately, that is not true. The indoor air is 2-5% more polluted than the air you breathe outdoors.

We are subjected to toxic air even inside our homes, this is called indoor air pollution. That is caused by certain belongings kept or activities performed, inside. Indoor air pollution decreases the quality of the air we breathe in often leading to various health issues especially in children. The health-risks the pollutants inside your homes possess is not worth compromising for. Hence, one must always look for ways to keep the surrounding air clean.

As Indoor Air Pollution remains at hazardous levels in most homes, we’ve listed five ways to filter the air in your bedrooms from harmful toxins:

  • Essential Oils

The presence of aromatic essential oils like lavender, cinnamon, lemon, tea tree, rosemary, oregano, etc. They are extremely beneficial to human health whilst being effective in warding off pesky insects and harmful microorganisms like fungi, bacteria, viruses and even mold. The fragrance of lavender is known to keep insects, especially mosquitoes, away whilst being a great stress buster for humans. Tea tree oil and Thieves oil have an excellent rate of killing airborne bacteria. These oils sprayed as mist using a mist sprayer or applied in small amounts at the corners of your bed. That will purify the air inside your bedrooms and allow you to breathe fresher, cleaner air.

Houseplants are more than just another addition to your interior décor. Studies show that certain houseplants are natural air purifiers that clean the air. By reducing indoor air pollutants like Benzene and Formaldehyde. It is the best way to tackle the problem of indoor air pollution. The most preferred plants for bedroom are Snake plant and Peace Lily as they can produce oxygen even at night. Hence providing you with freshly oxygenated air throughout the clock. Especially at night which will help you have a more relaxed and peaceful sleep. Other plants like Philodendron, Areca Palm, Golden Pothos, and Spider plant are also a choice of plants for purifying the air around you.

  • Increase Ventilation

Open windows or vents from time to time. That allows toxic air to move out and fresh air to move into the house. Switching on the fan, whilst keeping the windows open. It will help ventilate a maximum amount of impurities from the air at a much faster rate. However, make sure to not let more pollution come in that go out; install trickle vents to purify and cycle the air you breathe in if you live facing a busy road or in a comparatively polluted city.  Also, make sure to keep the bedroom doors close while cooking as lighting the gas stove releases harmful contaminants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide and is consider the major source of indoor air pollution.

A simple salt lamp on the dressing table or side table in your bedroom will do the trick of functionality and décor. The salt crystals are known to fight and reduce airborne pollutants. This will create a safe space for you inside your bedroom free from toxic air; this will help you relax and rejuvenate by breathing fresher air.

  • Maintain humidity levels

High moisture levels in the air will give rise to unwanted bacteria and mold. An air conditioner will help reduce excess moisture levels and helps control indoor irritants. It is recommend to invest in a dehumidifier if you live in cold, high humid regions. Using exhaust fans while cooking and bathing is also useful. As it effectively controls the excess moisture that may come in while performing the activities. Avoid overwatering the houseplants as it may increase moisture levels.
